Painting, Collecting, and Hunting Rocks in Florida

Painting, Collecting, and Hunting Rocks in Florida

Painting, collecting, and hunting rocks in Florida.

Painting, collecting, and hunting rocks has become a family past time. You can’t go anywhere in Tallahassee without hearing someone discussing it. At a recent book event the vendor next to me set up her table of wares. She chatted away with a customer about her items displayed. “Oh, please take a rock.”

My interest immediately perked. A customer selected a rock from many of the colorful ones displayed. Free rocks…free painted rocks.

“Do you perhaps have any rocks painted with a paisley design?” I asked.

As you can tell from the picture above, she had one in a paisley design. This rock went perfect with the cover of my book and title, Paisley Memories. And remained sitting on the brim of my hat for the rest of the book event. It might find its way into a gift-basket for the second novel in my Paisley Series.

The concept of rock painting is to brighten someone’s day and bring a smile to their face. You simply paint a rock and leave it at a public park or a business for someone to find. Rock hunters call this ‘art abandonment’. Let your imagination run wild. Artistic ability not required. Children and adults enjoy this family activity.

Tallahassee Rocks  and Wakulla Rocks are my favorite places to visit to see what’s trending in the rock design. Artwork can be as simple as using a Sharpie and writing a quote or as elaborate as painting a mandala. If you’re like me, you might need to purchase a rock painting kit at Barnes and Noble. More seasoned designers can check out Hobby Lobby craft stores for art supplies. Check out Lowes and Home Depot in the Garden area. See if your county has a ‘rock’ group on Facebook. Happy rock hunting!

  1. because I am not a facebooker, I am challenged with where to go to thank the person who left two painted rocks at Purple Martin Nurseries on Crawfordville Hwy.

the rocks had the perfect image of our sign and on the back a verse…one began “friends to flowers”. I was so shocked and delighted. I put the rocks back and later in the day the rocks were found by two little girls. I wish I had taken pictures. shame on me. I wish I had kept the rocks. shame on me.

    To a true artist….THANK YOU

    1. I’ll bet one out of ten people you ask will tell you that they either paint rocks or have heard about it. I’m happy to hear that finding some painted rocks gave you such happiness. It truly is the little things… They make me smile too.
